Things to Know Before Coming to TellurideAltitude Telluride is located at an elevation of 8750 feet above see level. Altitude sickness is a concern for anyone going to an elevation of over 8000 feet above sea level. The human body reacts to altitude sickness in a variety of ways. One of the body’s reactions is to dump water to allow the blood to carry more oxygen causing frequent urination. Failure to replace lost body fluids can lead to dehydration, severe headaches, and hypothermia when exposed to unfavorable weather. Individual responses can vary greatly and no one is immune from the effects. Our program is designed as a middle-of-the-road approach, and we do not guarantee that all clients will not get altitude sickness. Be aware of the following symptoms of high altitude sickness: · a generalized headache that often develops during the night and is present on waking; by day, the victim may feel light-headed · unusual tiredness out of proportion to the activity · appetite loss and nausea · restless sleep with irregular breathing · shortness of breath with exertion · the face is swollen, with bags under the eyes; rings on fingers feel tight And be sure to take the following precautions if you feel these symptoms: · Stop ascending or go down · Drink fluids · Rest · Take aspirin or ibuprofen · Take Diamox The simple rule is to drink plenty of water before coming to altitude and rest your first day at altitude. We recommend that you come to Telluride the day before and rest in order to feel good your first day of the program. Being in good physical shape will also help your body adjust to the altitude quicker. If the body is fit before your arrival to Telluride then it will naturally be able to transfer more oxygen to the body quicker. We recommend walking one to two miles three to four days a week with one longer walk during the week of four to five miles. This will not only help your body adjust to the altitude but also allow you to perform your best during the Program. Sun Exposure When at an elivation of 8750' you are over 1 1/2 miles above sea level. The sun's UV radiation is 50% more than at sea level. To protect yourself from the sun you must wear sunglasses, sunscreen and a hat. When hiking above treeline a long sleeve shirt is also a good idea to protect yourself from the sun's UV radiation. |
