Weight Loss Philosophy

At the San Sophia Hiking and Wellness Program our philosophy for weight loss is creating the right balance of exercise, diet, and wellness. Our nutrionalist, Lynn Mayer, has developed our food plan that we will be using throughout the week.

Wellness is a broad and general term that we define and accomplish through daily yoga and massage throughout the week. Yoga simultaneously works on the body, mind and spirit bringing integrative benefits to all aspects of self. It will enhance all aspects of one's normal daily life including work, play, relationships with others and more importantly your relationship with yourself. Yoga promotes self-knowledge, deep inner joy and poise. This hour of enlightenment gives you a fresh outlook to the day ad keeps you focused on your goals for the week. Massage is a great way to unwind from your day on the trail and relax the body in anticipation of the next day.

The goal of out food plan is to keep your blood sugar balanced throughout the day which will help reduce stress. Stress is a large contributor to eating the wrong foods. Stress causes most people to eat sweets and starches the convert sugar quickly into the bloodstream causing emotional highs and lows during the day. If you follow our plan you will maintain your blood sugar and maintain even energy throughout the day. The four keys to our food plan are:

1. Eating moderate amounts of quality protein at breakfast, lunch, and dinner – eggs, fish, turkey, chicken, lamb, and beef.
2. Eating lots of lower carbohydrate vegetables and fruits – lots of green vegetables with moderate portions of yellow and orange vegetables. The best fruits are berries, melons, and grapefruit.
3. Eating frequently – you should go no longer than 3-4 hours without eating.
4. Following the plan and not giving in to temptations to eat foods that are not recommended in the food plan.
The body will notice the change in your diet within the first 48 hours. Cravings will begin to subside within a week as your body’s biochemistry begins to shift in response to the new food choices.

The final key to weight loss is exercise. At the San Sophia Hiking and Wellness our exercise is based on hiking in the 50,000+ acre natural spa that surrounds Telluride. Hiking is a relatively low impact exercise that will give you a great sense of accomplishment at the end of the day. Along with hiking we also include two separate gym workouts throughout the week. The combination of hiking and gym workouts give you an understanding of your body and a way to carry what you learn in the program back to your everyday life.
